Coconut-Cardamom Rum Old Fashioned

I first tried 1888 Rum at WhiskeyFest about five years ago and seeing that it was one of the few rums poured at the event, it caught my eye immediately.  My first impression was that of a rich and complex rum that had a nice balance of woody tannins, sweetness, and smoothness - it was one of the first sipping rums that I fell for.

Which brings me to today, when the 1888 team reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to create a spirit-forward cocktail with their rum, I was so excited to revisit an old favorite so of course I said yes!

When thinking of flavors to use for a cocktail, I always start with the flavors of the spirit itself and I try to build on that experience, both through similar flavors and through contrast.  1888 is double cask matured, first in ex-bourbon barrels, and then first fill sherry casks.  Those who know me understand that I have a deep love and appreciation for whisk(e)y aged in sherry casks, and love the rich flavors of Christmas cake, dates, and cooked dried fruit that the wood brings to any spirit.  1888 is no different, it's a sherry-bomb and it's oh so delicious neat or served on a big king cube of ice.

This cocktail is a new-take on an old-fashioned, made with Brugal 1888, simple syrup, and bitters.   Seeing that this was a rum cocktail, I wanted to use a simple syrup with a slight tropical flavor, so I made a 1:1 coconut palm sugar syrup that was infused for a few minutes with coconut flakes.  I finished the drink with a few dashes of cardamom bitters, and garnished with a few cardamom pods, both broken and whole.

I love this cocktail because it instantly transports you to an exotic locale - a place where the palm trees blow in the wind, and where the food (and drink) is prepared with flavorful spices.  I have also tried preparing this cocktail with a few dashes of curry powder, a savory take on the flavors often found in South Asian cuisine: coconut, cardamom, and curry.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

Coconut-Cardamom Rum Old Fashioned

2 oz 1888 Rum
3/4 oz Coconut-Infused Coconut Palm Syrup
3 dashes Cardamom Bitters
3-4 Cardamom Pods for Garnish

In a mixing glass, stir 1888 with the syrup over ice.  Strain into an old-fashioned glass with a fresh cube of ice and add a few dashes of cardamom bitters.  Garnish with 3-4 cardamom pods.

Coconut-Infused Coconut Palm Syrup

1 cup Water
1 cup Coconut Palm Sugar
1/4 cup Coconut Shavings

Add water and coconut palm sugar to a pot and simmer on low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Turn off heat, and add coconut shavings to the syrup, and let cool.  Strain into a non-reactive container and store in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Stone Fruit Vodka Old Fashioned with Hangar 1 Vodka

I was recently invited to Summer Fête with Hangar 1 Vodka to drink delicious summery cocktails and chat with their Master Distiller, Caley Shoemaker.  It was a lovely event - delicious drinks, gorgeous nibbles, and everyone who came to the party was able to bring home their own bottle of Hangar 1 Straight Vodka painted by Katie Rodgers, aka Paper Fashion.

Hand Painted Bottles
Hangar 1 Straight Vodka is unique because it is made of a blend of pot-distilled wine grapes and column-distilled Midwestern Wheat, a process that gives the vodka a nice fruity flavor that marries beautifully with other fruit flavors.  Given that it's summertime and there is an abundance of fresh produce right now, I wanted to create my own summery infusion with fresh cherries and apricots - one of my favorite summer fruit combinations.  I put the fruit in a small glass bottle, topped it off with the vodka, and let it sit for about a week.

Apricot Cherry Infused Vodka
When it comes to cocktails, often a simple cocktail showcases a spirit best, and I wanted all those fresh fruit flavors to come through in this drink.  I immediately thought of a spin on an old fashioned - but with vodka!?!?!  I know, it feels like sacrilege!  Stick with me people - it's delicious.

I roasted up some more cherries (cut in half, 10 minutes at 400 degrees), and then muddled one whole cherry with a barspoon of sugar.  The roasted cherries caramelize and become extra sweet and delicious, becoming the perfect syrup for an old fashioned!  I added my apricot-cherry infused vodka, a barspoon of Amaro di Angostura and Barrel Aged Forbidden Bitters to give the cocktail a bit of barrel spiciness, rounding out the drink beautifully. Top it off with fresh apricot, half of a roasted cherry, and a sprig of Tarragon to add a bit of freshness.

And just like that, I've found my new favorite summer drink.

Enjoy!

White Pike Cardamom Old Fashioned

I've had a longstanding obsession with White Pike Whiskey for a while.  You can read me wax on about how much I love the bottle and the brand here, but today I'm craving a drink

I love the sweetness of White Pike that comes from the corn, and that smoky tobacco flavor that comes from the spelt and the malted wheat.  I was inspired to make a white whiskey old fashioned, something clean, simple, and easy to make.

I chose Cardamom Bitters for the old fashioned because I thought the bright, grassy, herbal flavor would work well with the sweetness of the corn whiskey, and I was right.  Stirred with a bit of simple syrup, this cocktail is creamy but crisp, and almost tastes like a middle eastern pastry.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Cheers!

Matt Talbert - The Cocktail Painter

When Gastronomista first started, it was less about cocktail culture as is it today, and was more about that fuzzy crossover between food and art.  I spent my time searching the internet looking for obscure installations, videos, sculptures, and of course, donut paintings.  But, then I fell in love with whiskey, and it seems I've been down the boozy rabbit hole ever since.

But for a moment, I would like to get back to my roots and talk about the work of Matt Talbert, the Los Angeles based painter who makes gorgeous still life paintings of cocktails.  (Booze & (Good) Art, a Gastronomista's dream beat!)

Mad Men Hostess Giveaway - CLOSED

Let's face it. One of the worst television news bits we encountered since the end of the Sopranos was the moment Mad Men was sent on hiatus. The reality of having to wait for Don Draper, dry martinis, and Joan and Betty's immaculate up-dos to re-enter our cinematic lives was far too long.

Although the glorious news that the wait's almost over (Season 5 airs March 25th on AMC!), our impatient (and insatiable) selves can barely hold over for a glimpse of Don nibbling on Oysters Rockefeller at Grand Central Oyster Bar, Roger Sterling guzzling down a proper Sidecar at PJ Clarke's, or the sight of Betty shaking things up with a Tom Collins at bridge night until then.

That's where the Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook comes in. Authors Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin carefully scanned and selected some of the paramount recipes from the haute ad-men era, including cocktails recipes like the 21 Club Bloody Mary, the essential Martini, a Blue Hawaii, to appetizers for canapés, entree recipes for dinner (think chicken Kiev or pan seared rib eye), and even dessert classics, like pineapple upside down cake.

The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook isn't simply recipes, but a historical account and Mad Men episode guide that pairs scenes from each season with every recipe, breaking down the when, where, and who that were eating and drinking these retro hits.

Manhattan Cocktail Classic Aftermath

Ah yes, the Manhattan Cocktail Classic Gala. An annual blow-out of extremes, excesses, and lots and lots of cocktails. 40,000 cocktails to be exact. With 3,000 guests celebrating and drinking - that's 13.3 cocktails per guest!

2011-05-15-images-5718924358_158038526b.jpg

We, unfortunately did not have 13.3 cocktails - but we can tell you (from today's headache and the junk-food cravings) that we had our fair share. The Manhattan Cocktail Classic Gala is quite a production. Created by the talented Lesley Townsend, this was the second year of the annual event that was attended by over 130 liquor vendors - read - an amazing opportunity to taste those unknown brands in one place!

The festivities took over the entire New York Public Library - cocktail and food stations in almost every room and corner of the building, live bands, caricatures, oysters bars, burlesque dancers dancing in large bird cages, and those grand staircases and devastatingly beautiful reading rooms filled with young New Yorkers dressed for the occasion. Festive fascinators, top hats, canes, masks, floral head pieces, ties with mini martini glasses, and so many prom dresses.

It was really wonderful to spend an evening in the Library - the exquisite Beaux-Arts marble building by architects Carrère and Hastings was completed in 1911. Party-goers wrapped around the block to get into the event, and upon entry we knew it was bound to be an epic night. Each vendor had a station and a signature cocktail for the event. Renowned bartenders such as Tony Abou-Ganim and Brian van Flandern poured what seemed like an endless number of cocktails (we hope they are treating themselves to a vacation after this week).

2011-05-15-images-5718900252_ac52f3f852.jpg

We started the evening with one of Tony's legendary Campari Negronis, then onto the Tanqueray no. 10 Tom Nichol, Barritt's Ginger Beer Just Got Paid, Farmer's Gin Gimlet, a taste of Cayrum (so delicious), Hibiki Highball, and our two favorite cocktails of the evening: the Glenlivet Blood and Sand, and the Yamazaki cocktail.

There were some more mixed in there as well - ok maybe we got close to 13.3...

We were bummed that we were not able to hit every station and try one of each cocktail - but it's probably best we didn't.
