The Mighty Doughnut - Emily Eveleth

It's no new news that we really like doughnuts.  What's not to like?  There's something so optimistic about doughnuts - pillowy clouds filled with jams and creams, sprinkled with crystalline sugar and crunchy jimmies, fragile yet so easy to greedily devour.  Guaranteed bliss for anyone who partakes.

What's better than a warm doughnut?  How about a doughnut bigger than you, mere human? Oozing, glistening in the light, opening itself, tempting you to reach out and taste it's sweet-sweet filling.

That's what we bring you today, dear readers.  Artist, Emily Eveleth paints just that - enormous doughnuts - but they are so much more than just paintings of doughnuts.

While doughnuts are a common everyday object, Eveleth's treatment of them brings them to life, giving them personality, and making them human in so many ways.  These doughnuts have personalities and emotions - some are heroic, some defeated, some are confident, some are lonely, some flirtatious, but all of them beautiful and magnificent.

We find ourselves feeling for these doughy characters.  Wanting to befriend them, comfort them, listen to their stories, and understand how they came to be.

Mighty, lonely, and poised - these doughnuts are more than kitsch americana - these doughnuts are us. Somehow they speak to the human condition - because maybe we too are filled with jams and creams, sprinkled with crystalline sugar, fragile, yet so easy to greedily devour.

Fried and True

Some culinary matches are clearly made in heaven. Wine and cheese. Tea and honey. Bacon and eggs.

Booze and doughnuts.

Wait, what was that last one? We must be dreaming, you say?

Well, we needn't fantasize about getting our liquor with a side of fried pastry any longer. Zac Young, pastry chef at Flex Mussels, has already garnered a following for his innovative doughnuts with toothsome fillings - think salted cajeta and spiced chocolate. But now, he has made our wildest fantasies reality by offering a secret, off-menu selection of Boozy Doughnuts, as well. Amongst the spiked varieties offered are Absinthe Chocolate, Margarita, Blueberry Daiquiri, and Maker's Mark Caramel.

For those responsible commuters who would like to start their workday off with a Flex treat, however, Young has also opened a pop-up doughnut stand in Grand Central Terminal, on the Lower Concourse. He'll only be slinging his sweet saucers there until February 4th, though, so get them while they're hot.

As for us, we'll sidle up to the bar and order one of the Maker's Mark Caramel variety.

On second thought... better make that a double.

UFD - Unidentified Flying Doughnut

Sometimes, all you need to make your day better is a doughnut.  Well, it's your lucky day, because today we bring you Kenny Scharf's flying doughnut paintings.  There are many to choose from, but these are our favorites.

Enjoy!

In This Donut Boutonniere, I Thee Wed

I can just see it now, as written up in the Sunday New York Times Vows: "The groom, a life-long fan of salty-sweet combinations, wore a black velvet Prada tux accented with a dark chocolate covered German pretzel boutonniere. The blushing bride, a sandwich accompaniment afficionado, descended the baroque spiral staircase in a Vera Wang special collection white chiffon gown and a turquoise and black polka dotted potato chip bouquet."

This sounds like my kind of wedding.

Etsy Find of the Day

We often browse Etsy for wonderful treasures, and the not-so wonderful treasures, but today we came up lucky.  We are loving these totes by Avril Loreti:

Even though we try to deny it, doughnuts are inexplicably delicious.  We are addicts. There, we said it. These scrumptious totes have the craving surging through our blood streams.  Off to Peter Pan we go, we think it's a red velvet kind of morning.

I Wish I Was A Donut

I Wish I Was A Donut
by Suzi

I wish I was a donut
And get eaten every day
To stick on someone's fingers
In a most delightful way

I wish I was a donut
Sugar coated just for fun
Full and round for easy grip
And a hole to put your tongue

I wish I was a donut
Long and filled with custard cream
Delicious on the taste buds
A succulent silken dream
